Andrews Air Force base also known as the "Gateway to the Capital" is located on over 4,000 acres of land in Prince George's County Maryland adjacent to Camp Springs in zip code 20762 and close to the nations capital.   Now home to over 20,000 active duty military and civilian employees, the base was originally founded back in the time of the civil war as a small outpost and was expanded via order of President Roosevelt in 1942 and became operational with flights in 1943.   The base was named after Lieutenant General Frank M. Andrews who died in an airplane crash the day after the original base opening. 

Andrews is best known for the elite 89th Airlift Wing also known as "The Presidents Wing" which handles flights around the world for VIP's including the President.  This arm of the Airforce officially transferred to Andrews in 1962 and has since hosted many memorable returns and reunions of military members including POW's and Hostages who were welcomed home at the base since the Vietnam era.

In addition the base hosts over 50 other units including the 459th airlift wing,  316th Wing, the 79th Medical Wing, the Air National Guard, Air National Readiness Center, the 113th wing and the Air Force District Washington.
